Cambodia approves 23 power sector projects, including 2 energy storage
Last week, Cambodia approved 23 investment projects in the power sector for 2024-2029, with a total expected investment of USD 5.79 billion.
The Cambodian government has stated in its PDP that it will need $9 billion of investment to develop new power plants and expand the national grid, of which $2.5 billion has been approved between 2022 and 2025. Opportunities exist for power generation and transmission equipment.
According to the Khmer Times, Minister of Mines and Energy Suy Sem reiterated during a lecture on "Cambodia's Energy Policy" at the Royal University of Phnom Penh on the 4th that the country will not build new coal power plants in the future. He also stated that Cambodia has publicly committed to not building hydropower dams on the Mekong River.
Cambodia plans to suppress electricity prices through the expansion of clean energy projects, reducing living costs, and promoting the development of industry, trade, and agriculture. Source:TrendForce
For electricity, many rural communities are making use of solar power. Cambodia had 305 MW of solar installed at the end of 2021, with seven grid-connected projects. Another 700 MW was planned or under construction. Cambodia's National Council for Sustainable Development is a council that is focused on growing the country's green economy.
